GE Advantium Turn Table Repair

September 30, 2013

I’ve been really happy with my 220V GE Advantium oven.  I’ve had it about eight years with no problems at all.  Then one day the turntable stopped turning.  My model is a SCA2000FBB but I think you’ll find this guide is useful for all the 220V versions of the oven.  It may also apply to the 110V version but I have no way of confirming that.  After removing the tray, the turn table just lifts out.  And after removing it, it was clear that the small square drive shaft was broken.

The standard disclaimers apply.  Do not attempt repairs if you are unsure or unqualified to complete them.  Use common sense and safety first.  This information is supplied for informational purposes only.  Now, here’s how I fixed it.

I did not remove the oven which is mounted in my cabinetry, and I did not open up the exterior covers.  All I had to do was remove the ceramic access cover around the shaft.  Here’s a picture of it.

Note the fastener is a tamperproof torx with a pin in the middle.  It turns out that getting one of these bits is very easy.  I had never looked before but once I did they were for sale everywhere.  I bought a kit of 30 different tamperproof bits from my local auto parts store for $4.  All of them 1/4” hex drive like any other screwdriver bits.  It makes you wonder, if getting these bits are so easy how do they really stop anybody from tampering with stuff?

Here’s the bit in question.  It’s a T-20H.

So use the bit to remove the cover screw, the cover, and lift out the broken shaft.

Here are the parts.

The replacement shaft (on the right) is available from Repair Clinic.  The part number is #769095.  Slide it onto the square metal shaft inside the oven and replace the ceramic cover.  Don’t over tighten or you’ll be replacing the cover too.

Obviously the broken chip off the old shaft was not recovered.  It is sitting somewhere in the bottom of my Advantium, probably keeping a bunch of crumbs company.  It doesn’t seem to cause any problems.
